What's Inside the Checklist

Every item below is in the free checklist. No paywalls, no upsells — just the questions you need to ask before buying.

Paddle Selection

8 items
  • Determine your skill level (beginner / intermediate / advanced)
  • Set your budget range ($50–$100 / $100–$150 / $150+)
  • Choose core material: Polymer (control) vs Nomex (power)
  • Pick face material: Fiberglass (touch) vs Carbon Fiber (spin)
  • Select thickness: 13–14mm (power) vs 16mm (control)
  • Measure grip size: 4.0" / 4.25" / 4.5"
  • Weigh your options: Lightweight (7.2–7.6 oz) vs Midweight (7.6–8.2 oz)
  • Check USAPA approval if playing in tournaments

Ball Selection

6 items
  • Identify your primary playing surface: indoor vs outdoor
  • Indoor balls: 26 holes, softer, quieter (Franklin X-26, Jugs)
  • Outdoor balls: 40 holes, harder, wind-resistant (Dura Fast 40, Franklin X-40)
  • Check for USAPA approval for tournament play
  • Buy in packs of 3–6 (balls wear out faster than you think)
  • Cold weather players: look for balls rated for low temperatures

Footwear

7 items
  • Measure foot width — wide feet need EE or 4E sizing
  • Check outsole: herringbone pattern for best court grip
  • Look for lateral support reinforcement on the upper
  • Cushioning: gel or foam midsole for joint protection
  • Non-marking sole required for indoor courts
  • Replace every 6–12 months or 500+ hours of play
  • Health conditions: plantar fasciitis → extra arch support; ankle issues → high-top

Accessories

6 items
  • Overgrip: replace every 4–6 hours of play (Tourna Grip, Gamma)
  • Paddle cover: protects edge guard and face from scratches
  • Bag: at least 2 paddle slots + ball compartment
  • Sunglasses: polarized, wraparound for outdoor play
  • Ball hopper: 50–75 ball capacity for solo drilling
  • Edge tape: extends paddle life by 2–3x

Before You Buy

6 items
  • Read at least 3 independent reviews (not just Amazon)
  • Check return policy — most paddles can't be returned once used
  • Look for demo programs at local clubs before committing
  • Verify affiliate disclosures on review sites (including ours)
  • Compare prices across Amazon, direct brand sites, and specialty retailers
  • Check for current year model — paddle tech changes fast

Bonus: 4 Things Most Buyers Get Wrong

These are the mistakes we see most often — and they're all avoidable.

Demo before you buy

Most local pickleball clubs have demo paddles. Try 3–4 before spending $150+.

Grip size matters more than face material

Wrong grip size causes wrist and elbow injuries. Measure your hand before anything else.

Start lighter, go heavier later

Beginners almost always benefit from lighter paddles. You can always add lead tape later.

Balls wear out fast outdoors

Outdoor balls last 3–10 sessions depending on court surface. Buy in bulk.
